These jeans were made using denim woven on vintage shuttle looms, a first in Japan. They were created in 1986 and are known as the originators of Japanese replica jeans.

Using denim fabric woven with uneven yarn dyed using "kase-zome" (hank dyeing) with indigo dye from Japanese traditional "tade-aizome" (polygonum tinctorium), STUDIO D'ARTISAN & SA. researched vintage jeans from before the 1950s, when jeans were at their peak. They combined the details with the silhouette of French work pants to create the commemorative first model, the world's first vintage-spec selvedge jeans, the "DO-1".

The "DO-1" introduced the completely new concepts of "vintage" and "selvedge (ears)" that were not present in previous jeans. It laid the foundation for the vintage replica boom of the 90s and beyond, and is a landmark pair of jeans that sparked the world's attention towards Japanese jeans.
